US midterms Trump's party loses the US House and Senate
In the 3 November midterm elections, Democrats took both chambers of the US Congress[1]. Governments around the world reacted, and Lula's allies saw in the result an echo of Brazil[2, 3].
The result
Democrats take both chambers
Democrats won control of the House and the Senate. On 5 November, CBS projected at least 54 Senate seats, with two races still open. In the House, CBS estimates between 251 and 268[1]. A majority there takes 218[4].
Voters interviewed by the press cited the cost of living, the price of gas and food, and the US war with Iran[4]. MS NOW also points to health-care costs[5]. Trump was not on the ballot. He told Fox News the Democrats "did a good job" and "fought hard"[4].
Why it matters
A defeat measured before the vote
On 29 October, Trump stood at about 37% approval and 60% disapproval in the Silver Bulletin, RealClearPolling and New York Times averages[6].
For CNN analyst Aaron Blake, it was "an equally historic setback for Donald Trump's presidency", and tariffs were the administration's "original sin". According to The Economist, cited by Blake, Democrats would have won the national vote by about 13 points, the largest margin since 1976[7].
Washington
What changes in Congress
With the committees, Democrats gain the power to subpoena and investigate. Robert Garcia, expected to chair Oversight, wants to focus on what he called "Trump family corruption", including the crypto ventures. On impeachment, Hakeem Jeffries said nothing has been ruled out[8].
Jeffries wants to reverse the Medicaid cuts, return tariff authority to Congress and stop the war with Iran[8]. Trump's veto and the Senate's 60-vote rule limit what Democrats can pass[5].
The world
Who said what
Spanish prime minister Pedro Sánchez: "It happened in Brazil. It just happened in the US. And it will soon happen in Spain." The Kremlin hopes the result won't affect Trump's "peacemaking efforts". Iran's parliament speaker said: "Americans said NO TO WAR"[2].
In Brazil, Lula and the presidential palace had not commented as of 4 November. Allies spoke for themselves. Randolfe Rodrigues: "It happens in Brazil, it happens in the US"[3]. The talks on the US tariffs on Brazil, resumed in August and paused during the US campaign, are still pending[9].
