Renan Santos Renan Santos fought Flávio, not the far right’s program

Renan Santos, Missão’s presidential candidate, called Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro "vagabundos" (bums)[1]. His program calls for what Flávio said on TV he would not do[2], and in the runoff he refused to vote for Lula[3].

Program

What Flávio denied, Renan wrote down

Renan Santos’s program calls for a constitutional amendment to "decouple pension and welfare benefits from the minimum wage"[1]. Missão is the party created by the MBL[4]. In practice, pensions and benefits would stop rising with the minimum wage.

The same program ends the minimum spending the Constitution requires on health and education[1] and proposes the "end of Bolsa Família", the cash-transfer program[4]. In a TV Globo interview on October 16, Flávio Bolsonaro said he would touch neither the link between pensions and the minimum wage nor the minimum spending on health and education[2].

Security

"We will kill whoever steals"

At a Missão event on August 1, 2026, Renan said: "we will kill whoever steals"[1]. Flávio also proposes prisons on the model of Bukele’s El Salvador[5]. Renan goes further by talking about killing.

He promises a state of emergency against organized crime from day one and, according to Agência Pública, warns that he will defy any Supreme Court ruling against it[4].

Democracy

"This farce will end"

In February 2024, after calling poor regions with corrupt elites "victims of democracy", Renan said: "There’s no such thing as this democracy talk. […] That’s why this farce will end at some point"[4].

Federal prosecutors (MPF) have brought a civil suit against him, not a criminal case, over videos in which he called Indigenous people occupying a terminal in Santarém (Pará) "vagabundos" (bums). In a preliminary order, the court told him to delete the videos. The case has not been decided[6].

Runoff

Neutral on Lula, a spoiled ballot

Renan won 2.6 million votes in the first round, 2.24% of valid votes. After the first round, he said: "There is no right without Bolsonaro"[7]. On October 9, Renan said: "I hate the PT, I will never vote for Lula"[8].

On October 20, he announced: "I’ll spoil my ballot. Or I won’t vote at all." And he said his voters who backed Flávio would "embarrass themselves"[3].

Opinion

Attention now, capital in 2030

In the view of Prisma Popular’s editors, fighting Flávio is not enough to earn a stage. Distance from Flávio is not closeness to working people: Renan’s program decouples benefits from the minimum wage and ends the minimum spending on health and education[1].

Every share now becomes his political capital for 2030. As the editors see it, Jair Bolsonaro was also treated for years as an exotic, harmless figure before 2018. Treating Renan as a likeable novelty repeats that mistake.
